Independence Day: Resurgence hits theaters this week, though you wouldn’t necessarily know it unless you’ve been keeping a close eye on this month’s new releases. Fox has no plans to screen the film for press in advance, so if you’re waiting to read some reviews before committing to see the sequel this weekend, you can go ahead and stop now. But Fox is still hoping to lure audiences in even without some positive early buzz, mostly via fun viral videos like these.
When Cate Blanchett was initially rumored for the Ocean’s Eleven spinoff, so too was the film’s working title: Ocean’s Ocho, which refers to the number of characters in the ensemble for Gary Ross’ female-fronted heist project. Ross himself has now officially confirmed the title for the film, which he’s been developing with original Ocean’s trilogy director Steven Soderbergh for some time now. And if you’re wondering just how similar Ross’ film will be to its predecessors, the answer is “pretty similar.”
Yes, yes, our old pal Stay Puft the giant marshmallow man is back in these new TV spots for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, but the real delight here is watching Melissa McCarthy fire her proton pack at the crotch of a huge, sinister version of the iconic logo. “How do you like that?!” she shouts, and I think the only response is, "Very much, please continue."
Steven Spielberg has only gotten busier in recent years; the prolific director has been adding a fair amount of projects to his growing to-do list, including Indiana Jones 5, set to hit theaters in 2019. Harrison Ford will return to reprise his iconic role as the archaeological adventurer despite repeatedly denied rumors that Disney is looking to pass the torch to a new star. If you had any remaining doubts, Spielberg himself assures fans that Ford isn’t going anywhere — at least not in his Indy universe.
Finding Dory hits theaters next week, but Pixar has already been hard at work planning another major sequel — and though it might not be one you’re too thrilled about, it’s definitely going to make plenty of fans happy. Cars 3 will hit theaters next summer, and we have some new plot details and a couple of pieces of concept art to get you all revved up for Pixar’s next animated adventure.
Faith-based films have been riding a wildly successful wave for several years now, only recently stumbling a bit with the underwhelming box office returns for God’s Not Dead 2. And while that seemed to indicate that faithful audiences might not be too keen on sequels, Mel Gibson may very well prove that theory wrong as the actor and director is apparently plotting a sequel to The Passion of the Christ.
Following their delightful appearance with the original Ghostbusters cast on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the ladies of Paul Feig’s reboot — along with their dopey receptionist — have assembled in a brand new poster. And if that’s not enough for you, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy each have their very own featurette, offering a proper intro to their respective characters along with a little dose of new footage.
Gary Ross’ female-fronted Ocean’s Eleven sorta-sequel-spinoff-whatever has started picking up steam, and in addition to confirming Cate Blanchett’s casting, the latest update adds two more talented names to the ensemble: Mindy Kaling and Helena Bonham Carter. The trio join Sandra Bullock in the upcoming project, which is being produced by original Ocean’s trilogy director Steven Soderbergh.
For as many Superman movies exist, there are just about twice as many versions of the iconic superhero that didn’t make it to the big screen. Perhaps the most famous of the bunch is Tim Burton’s Superman movie, which would have starred Nicolas Cage. But there was another notable project that never got off the ground, with Jude Law briefly attached to play the Kryptonian hero. There are a few reasons why that movie didn’t move forward, but for his part, Law explains what made him change his mind about taking on the famous role.
Somehow — in between working out, reading scripts, and filming Fast 8 and Jumanji — Dwayne Johnson finds time to share updates and sneak peeks from his upcoming films with his sizable fan base. Today’s Rock-sclusive is the first official poster for Disney’s Moana, the animated musical adventure featuring the voices of Johnson (obviously) and newcomer Auli’i Cravalho. And in case you were wondering when we might see the first teaser, Johnson’s got you covered there, too.
Why watch just a few famous landmarks get blown up when you can pay the same amount to see twice as many (maybe more?) of our beloved manmade monuments explode? 20th Century Fox is bringing not one, but both Independence Day films to theaters on June 23, giving you a chance to test your loyalty to Jeff Goldblum with an epic double feature.
Tom Hiddleston hasn’t seemed particularly enthusiastic or optimistic about reprising the role of Loki in the MCU, but with Avengers: Infinity War promising the epic assembly of Marvel characters yet and a new Thor sequel on the way, the actor’s return seemed inevitable. During a recent appearance at Wizard World, Hiddleston expressed excitement for Thor: Ragnarok, teasing the evolution of his mischievous villain and confirming another run-in with the Hulk. Oh, and he also responded to those James Bond rumors.
