Avril Lavigne may not want to grow up, but she did a very adult thing last year. The bratty French Canadian singer, set to marry Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, moved to Paris while she was single in order to learn to speak French.

Wait, she couldn't use the Rosetta Stone program or French for dummies? Or get a local tutor?

Turns out she decided to live in Paris so she would be put into situations that forced her to learn and use the language since she'd have no other way to commuicate. That's certainly a smart way to do it.

"Last year I was single for the first time and I sold my house in L.A., and I'd just finished my world tour and I was like, 'I think I’m going to go to France,'" she admitted. "I went all by myself, I didn't know anyone and I got an apartment and I did school with Berlitz, five days a week, six hours a day."

The independent singer spent her time absorbing the city, its culture and its language. "I walked around the streets by myself and I was in school," she recalled. "It was so weird because I’m super ADD and I can’t sit still. It was hard and I was jet-lagged too for, like, a month. But it was really cool. I loved it."

Learning the language on spec was critical, especially when she sustained an injury and needed to get herself situated at a hospital! "I ended up hurting my back and I was in the hospital in Paris by myself," she said. "I had to figure it all out." Necessity is the mother of invention.

She's planning on furthering her education when it comes to the language, saying, "I’m still gonna continue to learn. It’s so much fun, speaking another language."

Her reason for learning French? She did it for dear ol' dad. "I have my French passport and my dad is from France, but I’m also a French Canadian, so I really wanted to learn French; it was important," she said.
