Beware of Phone Scammers Claiming to be the Amarillo Police Department Collecting Donations

There is a new phone scam sweeping through Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle.

Residents in the Amarillo have reported that there are phone scammers calling them asking for donations.  The phone number being reported is 806-318-4549.  They are claiming to be with the Amarillo Police Department and they are asking for monetary donations.

If you receive one of these phone calls please hang up.  The Amarillo Police Department will not call asking for monetary donations over the phone.

These scammers use caller ID spoofing to make it look as if their phone number is a different number and even a local number.

If you do receive a phone call like this from someone claiming to be from the Amarillo Police Department or another company asking for donations or payment, never give your personal information to them over the phone.

Always verify with the actual company to see if they are accepting donations and/or needing payment.

Protect yourself and your identity.  Even if the number looks local, it probably isn't, always, always, always, verify.
