Nearly 200 music industry figures -- including artists like Lady Gaga, Zayn Malik, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Paul McCartney, Britney Spears, Adam Lambert and more -- cosigned Billboard's open letter to Congress, urging for tighter gun control laws.

The letter, published June 23, comes as a direct response to two violent events in Orlando, Florida: June 12's tragic nightclub massacre, where gunman Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 innocent people at gay club Pulse, and the death of Christina Grimmie, who was murdered by an obsessed fan that same weekend.

"Music always has been celebrated communally, on dance floors and at concert halls," the letter reads. "But this life-affirming ritual, like so many other daily experiences — going to school or church or work — now is threatened, because of gun violence in this country."

The letter goes on to implore Congress to pass stricter gun laws, making for more in-depth background checks.

"The one thing that connects the recent tragedies in Orlando is that it is far too easy for dangerous people to get their hands on guns," the letter continues. "We call on Congress to do more to prevent the gun violence that kills more than 90 Americans every day and injures hundreds more, including: Require a background check for every gun sale [and] Block suspected terrorists from buying guns."

Billboard also released a statement in conjunction with the letter, which serves as the magazine's cover this week, saying they received signatures from Joan Jett and Lady Gaga “within minutes” of asking those involved in the music industry for their support.

“Within hours, and then in a matter of just a few days, nearly 200 top artists and executives — pop stars (including Grimmie's friend Selena Gomez), rappers, rock gods, legends, Broadway heroes, even two Beatles and Yoko Ono — lent their voices to the chorus of Americans looking to our political leaders for change," Billboard wrote.
