A man died after he was hit by an oncoming train on Friday, February 26th, in Canyon.

According to news reports, John Griswald was riding his bike when he stopped at the train tracks in Canyon. Apparently, there was an eastbound train approaching, so he stopped very close to the tracks. Unfortunately, a westbound train was also approaching.

The westbound train hit Griswald. He was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery, but died on Saturday morning.

Canyon has experienced several tragic deaths by train in the past few years. In 2012, a 21-year-old West Texas A&M cheerleader died after her vehicle was struck. A 52-year-old woman was hit while jogging in 2010.

Several dozen trains pass through Canyon every day. Last year, Canyon enacted a noise restriction that prohibits the trains from blowing their horns at certain intersections in town. The city built new medians around the railroad tracks to stop people from driving around the gate and crossing the tracks while a train is coming.

According to the Canyon Police Chief, the train engineer blew his horn when he saw Griswald near the tracks on Friday.
