As technology advances things that once were a comfort in our life disappear.  That is what will happen with compact discs.  In my lifetime, I have seen records phased out because of 8 tracks tapes.  Eight track tapes phased out because of cassettes and cassettes phased out because of CD's.  Now CD's are slowly being phased out because of digital downloads.

According to Hardware:

The major record labels are planning to kill off the CD format by the end of next year to make way for digital downloads only. The notion is that, by the end of 2012, the majors will focus entirely on downloads. The only CDs that will go on sale through 2013 and beyond will be special editions and albums from the biggest artists.

I know it is inevitable that the CD format will go away, but for me it is kind of sad.  I enjoy being able to put a CD into my car stereo.  I like to burn my mp3s onto a CD for that purpose.  C'est la Vie CD's.
