When I was a little girl my grandmother was a canner.  She and my grandfather grew vegetables in their quite large garden.  They had every fruit tree imaginable.  She canned a lot of food.  It's what they did.  However, one of my favorite things that she made was apple butter.

She would take the apples from their huge apple trees and she would make pies, she would make jelly and she would make apple butter.

Apple butter was my favorite thing.  A spoon or two of apple butter on a hot buttered slice of toast was heaven.

I miss those days.  A lot.

I miss the smell of her apple butter cooking on the stove.  It was a comforting smell.  I used to love to watch her work.

So, now that time is passed and she has passed, I was looking for a way to bring that childhood memory to life and I think I found it.
Crocking the Apple Butter

5 lbs of Apples your choice, or mix and match

4 c sugar ( I like half white, half brown)

2t cinnamon

1/2 t ground cloves

1/4t nutmeg

Core and slice apples and put them in the crockpot.  Mix the spices in a bowl and pour over the apples.

Cook on low for 10-12 hours until it has turned a darker brown and thickened.

Put into canning jars and follow the canning instructions or put in freezer containers and freeze.
