Canyon, the quiet town nestled just south of Amarillo, is known for being a safe place. So the town was shocked to hear that a student brought a gun to Canyon High School on Wednesday.

The school was put on lockdown after a student was found in possession of a firearm around 3:20 p.m. The lockdown was lifted at 4:00 p.m, 20 minutes after normal school hours typically end. At that time, the school used its Twitter account to report that there had been a lockdown and that it was over.

Now, parents are saying they did not find out that there had been a lockdown until much later that day because they were unaware of the tweet.

According to Canyon Police Chief Dale Davis, the current notification system (posting on Twitter) creates less "chaos" in these situations.

Do you think this is an effective method?

This is the first time a student has been apprehended with a firearm on the CHS campus. The last time Canyon High School had a lockdown because of a gun threat, the gun in question ended up being a microphone stand.
