Emma Watson Channels ‘Pretty Woman’ and Lands the Cover of British GQ [PHOTO]
Actress Emma Watson scored herself the cover of British GQ in character as Nicki, a pole-dancing “Valley vixen” who breaks into celebrities homes and makes off with their valuables in the upcoming film, ‘The Bling Ring.’
Sofia Coppola’s newest venture is based off the true story of a group of teenagers who burgled celebrity houses in and around the Hollywood Hills for almost a year (and judging by the photo here, Nicki sees Vivian Ward, Julia Roberts’ character in ‘Pretty Woman,’ as a role model).
“When I read the script and I realized that essentially it was a meditation on fame and what it’s become to our society, I had to do it,” Watson told GQ of her decision to take the uncharacteristic role. “[Nicki] is everything that I felt strongly against – she’s superficial, materialistic, vain, amoral.”
But just because she plays Nicki doesn’t mean Watson has to like her.
“I realized that I hated her. How do you play someone you hate?” she mused. “But I found it really interesting and it gave me a whole new insight into what my job, or my role as an actress, could be … That’s so exciting for me because it meant I was really acting.”
Did you feel that burn, ‘Harry Potter’ franchise? Real acting. Why don’t you get Professor Snape to whip you up an antidote for that wicked sting.
Another reason Watson took a departure on her usual roles? She didn’t want to be stuffed into any period clothing for fear she’d be typecast: “I was open-minded about doing anything, but the one thing I didn’t want to do was get myself into a corset because I was worried I’d never get out again.”
