On last night’s Season 7 finale of Game of Thrones – SPOILER alert – Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow Aegon Targaryen hooked up. The King in the North and the Mother of Dragons finally met for the first time this season, and though they squabbled at first, the two eventually fell for one another. But this union has been destined since the beginning of Game of Thrones.

In a new video essay we break down the parallels between Jon and Daenerys across seven seasons of the HBO series. Their storylines have mirrored each other thematically and visually, from the ways both befriended outcasts of respectable houses (Jon with Sam Tarley, Dany with Jorah Mormont) to their abilities to pass through fire (Jon metaphorically through his Lord of Light resurrection, and Dany literally, twice). Looking back at their comparisons reveals that this union of ice and fire, aunt and nephew, was inevitable.
