If you're uninsured, an Amarillo health coalition has you covered. The AABHC has teamed up with United Supermarkets, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center- Breast Center of Excellence, and Lowe's Supermarkets to get uninsured women free Mammograms.

AABHC will be at the United on Amarillo Blvd East on Wednesday, May 4th and at United Amigo's on I-40 East on Thursday, May 12th.

Persons who may qualify for no cost mammograms are:

  • Age 40 and older- unless there is strong family history that calls for earlier screening
  • Live in the Texas Panhandle,
  • Have no health insurance coverage
  • Have too much income to qualify for other programs.

Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of death of women.  In 2012, 226,870 cases of breast cancer were reported.  That resulted in over 39,000 deaths. Although African-American women have fewer cases, they resulted in a higher death rate.

Annual mammogram screening is encouraged to promote early detection and perhaps lessen treatment for those who may be diagnosed.  Of course, it is also a happy day when a woman’s mammogram detects no cancer.  What a relief!
