‘Glee’ Writing Out Cory Monteith’s Character

Cory Monteith

The late Cory Monteith‘s character is being written out of ‘Glee,’ a network spokesman confirms.

The beloved Finn Hudson will be written out in the third episode of the upcoming season, FOX entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly told the Television Critics Association today (Aug. 1). No details have been revealed on exactly how it will happen, but Reilly did say that ‘Glee’ cast members and creators will be filming PSAs about addiction.

The 31-year-old actor died of a drug and alcohol overdose in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13. He had battled addiction for several years, often in the public eye.

His untimely death not only caused major heartbreak for his family, fans and castmates — especially girlfiend Lea Michele — it also prompted ‘Glee’ to delay its return to production. Filming of the series’ fifth season is now scheduled to begin Monday (Aug. 5); its first episode will air Sept. 26.

The season’s third episode will feature a special tribute to Finn, ‘Glee’ co-creator Ryan Murphy said last month. “The right thing to do for the show, at least at this point, is to have that character pass,” he said. “When we do the tribute episode to that character, we’ll have to do it in a way where the castmembers will not have to re-create feelings of grief that they’ve had [following Monteith’s death] — but do it in an upbeat way. If we can do this responsibly and help young people through these feelings, that’s the best that we can hope for.”

Proceeds from the episode are expected to be donated to a new fund in Monteith’s name.
