Not one. Not two. But three. That’s how many consecutive life sentences William Balfour, the man who was convicted of murdering three members of Jennifer Hudson‘s family in Chicago back in 2008, will serve.

Balfour, who is Hudson’s former brother-in-law, was found guilty of first degree murder on May 11. He shot Hudson’s mother Darnell Donerson, her brother Jason Hudson and her nephew Julian King, who was just 7, to death. Balfour, who was married to Hudson’s sister Julia, was also convicted of home invasion and residential burglary. It’s safe to say he won’t be seeing the light of day anytime soon. Nor should he after reportedly succumbing to a jealous rage related to his ex-wife and her new boyfriend resulting in massacring the Hudson family.

According to TMZ, Balfour, 31, was in the Chicago courtroom to face his sentencing, as was Hudson. He maintained his innocence throughout. During the sentencing, the judge delivered a harsh statement to Balfour, saying, “Your soul is as barren as dark space.”

We hope that this sentence and that fact that Balfour will rot in prison helps the Hudson family achieve some closure in their lives.

Hudson fans can catch the singer as a guest star on Season 2 of ‘Smash.’
