J.K. Rowling to Pen ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ Screenplay
Good news for Potterheads! J.K. Rowling will pen yet another film for those in withdrawal after the conclusion of the ‘Harry Potter’ series. The British author announced that she’ll make her screenwriting debut with ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.’
‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is the name of one of the official Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’s textbooks. Rowling penned the tome under the pen name ‘Newt Scamander’ in 2001.
Rowling made the announcement on her Facebook page.
“‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” she explained. “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”
The screenplay, which will be distributed through Warner Bros., is a bit of a pet project for Rowling, so Potterheads won’t have to worry about an outsider messing up their world.
“The idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ realized by another writer was difficult,” she explained. “Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hardcore Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favorite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.”
