Alanis Morissette‘s first album in four years, ‘Havoc and Bright Lights,’ is scheduled for an August release, but fans don’t have to wait that long to get their first taste of the new music. The first single from the record, ‘Guardian,’ was released online this week.

‘Guardian’ features a sunny melody highlighted by piano and electric guitar. Morissette hasn’t lost her unique ability to turn a phrase. She sings, “You in the chaos, feigning sane / You who has pushed beyond what’s humane / Them as the ghostly tumbleweed / And where was your watchman then?

On the catchy hook, Morissette promises to look after a special someone — perhaps her one-year-old son? She sings, “I’ll be your keeper for life as your guardian / I’ll be your warrior of care, your first warden / I’ll be your angel on call, I’ll be on demand / The greatest honor of all as your guardian.” ‘Guardian’ is short, poppy and a welcome return for the Canadian superstar.

‘Havoc and Bright Lights’ is Morissette’s eighth album and first since she left Maverick Records for Collective Sounds. The singer, who turns 38 next month, has recorded five straight Top 10 albums in the U.S., starting with 1995′s ‘Jagged Little Pill,’ which sold 14.7 million copies to become one of the highest-selling albums by a female artist in history.
