Madonna on Lady Gaga: ‘She’s Not Britney Spears’

The Advocate

Paws up, claws out. While we’re sure interviewers can’t stop asking Madonna about Lady Gaga, Madge can’t stop dissing the Mother Monster at every turn.

Their media feud is extended with Madge’s latest round of statements, where she comments on Gaga’s maternal and close relationship with the LGBT community, which has exaulted her to icon status. (Lest we forget that some of the Material Girl’s most ardent supporters are from the gay community, so she probably feels like Gaga is glomming onto a subset of her fans, too.)

In her cover story for The Advocate, Madonna speculated upon Gaga’s beloved status in the gay world to The Advocate, saying, “It seems genuine. It seems natural, and I can see why she has a young gay following. I can see that they connect to her kind of not fitting into the conventional norm. I mean, she’s not Britney Spears. She’s not built like a brick s—house.”

Wait, what? What does Gaga’s build have to do with connecting with the gay community? She seems to be intimating that Brit, at the apex of her Lolita sexpot days, had a rock solid, voluptuous figure you could bounce quarters off of — making her perfect body less easy to relate to. Brit was closer to “perfect,” where as Gaga celebrates flaws. But does that make Gaga imperfect?

Madge also said, “She seems to have had a challenging upbringing, and so I can see where she would also have that kind of connection, a symbiotic relationship with gay men.”

Hmm, Gaga talks about being from a loving, Italian family, so we’re not so sure what she means by challenging or where she got her info.

Reductive. Not a brick s—house. What’s next in the Madge-on-Gaga war of words? Mama Monster has been silent about the whole deal, save for her innocuous Super Bowl comment.

Madge also commented on her own gay fanbase, saying that she is still one of their patron saints who will still give the gay community all her luvin’. “I never left them,” she said. “When you’re single, you certainly have more time to socialize and hang out with your gay friends, but then you get married and you have a husband and you have children, and your husband wants you to spend time with him.”

She’s continues: “I’m not married anymore, but I have four kids, and I don’t have a lot of time for socializing. I hope nobody’s taking that personally. It certainly was not a conscious decision. As it stands, most of my friends in England are gay. But I’m back. Never fear.”
