Past ‘American Idol’ Contestants Deny the Show Is Racist

By now, you’ve probably heard about the seriously scandalous story of nine former ‘American Idol‘ contestants suing the show because they believe it’s a racist attempt at a ratings boost.

Well, some other former ‘Idol,’ four as a matter of fact, recently came out to defend the show that projected them into the limelight, claiming that it’s not the least bit racist.

According to TMZ, season six finalist Melinda Doolittle wholeheartedly disagrees with the suit. “It is shocking to see such allegations. In my experience on the show, the ‘Idol’ team strives to champion everyone, regardless of race,” said Doolittle. “However, each contestant is explicitly told that the withholding of information that may compromise the show or artist, can and will result in immediate disqualification.”

Vonzell Solomon, a season four finalist, concurred with Doolittle, adding, “I didn’t experience any of that [racial discrimination] … all of our contracts were clear about how the background checks worked and that we could be disqualified if we lied about our past.”

Season five winner Taylor Hicks and season 10 finalist Casey Abrams also had something to say regarding the racist claims, with Abrams noting that those involved in the outrageous claim shouldn’t “bite the hand that feeds them.” “Those guys beat thousands of people who wanted to be on TV. ‘Idol’ is picky, but I’m not sure about racist,” he said.

“‘American Idol’ is for everyone,” agreed Hicks. “All walks of life go through the show. Not once did I see the show discriminate towards anyone. It’s all about the votes.”

FOX and producers at ‘Idol’ have yet to comment on the allegations, but make sure you leave us a comment telling PopCrush what side you’re on!
