Is there an age limit to the Halloween tradition?

People are happy to open their doors and dole out candy to small children dressed as princesses or superheroes. But that hospitality disappears once a kid turns 13.

I remember my first Halloween as a teenager. I knew I was too old to go trick-or-treating, but there weren't any other activities for kids my age, so my friends and I dressed up in our costumes and took our chances around the neighborhood.

While people were friendly, it was clear they didn't really want to give us any candy. "Aren't you a little old to be trick-or-treating?" they asked.

We weren't technically doing anything wrong - we were dressed appropriately, polite to other trick-or-treaters, and, most importantly, we weren't out drinking or doing drugs.

So what's the problem with teenagers going trick-or-treating?

I understand that some people ruin it for everyone. It's definitely not right for teenagers to push little kids out of the way or be disrespectful to the people handing out candy.

But is it really so bad for those who just want to keep the Halloween spirit alive?
