Stephen King’s ‘It’ Sends the Losers’ Club to Pennywise’s Lair in New Images and Concept Art

It’s a big day for all kinds of new images and details from several highly-anticipated films, and you have Comic-Con to thank for most of it — well, not it as in It, the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s classic horror novel, which is set to hit theaters in September. As we inch closer to the release date, four new images have debuted online, giving us another look at the film’s young ensemble cast as they head into the heart of evil, aka Pennywise’s lair.

Entertainment Weekly debuted two new stills and two pieces of concept art from the adaptation, directed by Andy Muschietti (Mama). King’s iconic horror story has been split into two parts, with the first focusing on the characters in their pre-teen years (the second will jump ahead to when they reunite as adults), when they first encounter a terrifying evil entity that takes the form of a demented clown known as Pennywise. The new images show off the young cast, while the concept art teases their journey to the villain’s lair:

EW has more details in their new feature on the film, which notably reveals an interesting deviation from the source material: As King’s constant readers know, the novel opens with the gruesome death of little Georgie Denbrough, who is lured to a sewer opening and murdered by Pennywise (played in the new film by Bill Skarsgard). But in Muschietti’s version, we don’t see Georgie die — he simply goes missing.

That’s a fairly meaningful narrative change, particularly for his older brother Bill (Midnight Special’s Jaeden Lieberher), who leads his group of misfit friends — aka the Losers’ Club — on a desperate mission down to the sewers to find George. Although it may seem like a minor deviation, shifting the motive away from revenge may alter the emotional impact of the story in a positive way.

It also stars Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs and Jeremy Ray Taylor. It’s also worth noting that Javier Botet, the masterful actor behind creatures in films like Alien: Covenant, Crimson Peak and The Conjuring 2, will play the role of the Leper.

It hits theaters on September 8.
