Stand By for Stephen King Movie Secrets

You know Stephen King as one of the world’s most prolific and beloved fiction authors. But did you know King spent years writing books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, and that several “Bachman” stories have been adapted to the screen too? That list includes the likes of the Arnold Schwarzenegger film The Running Man. That’s just one of the facts featured in the latest installment of You Think You Know Movies!

King’s made millions selling the film and TV rights to his books and short stories. But he’s also supported young filmmakers by allowing them to make legal adaptations of his short stories for just one dollar. One such director who took King up on this offer was Frank Darabont, whose debut short film was an adaptation of the Stephen King story “The Woman in the Room.” Darabont wasn’t pleased with the results, but the friendship he struck with King worked out anyway; Darabont went on to adapt numerous King books to the screen, including the hugely successful version of The Shawshank Redemption.

You Think You Know Movies? is a ScreenCrush original series that dives deep into the cinematic worlds of your favorite movies and freeze frames a few tidbits you might not have known. We’ve already tackled Star WarsThe Avengers and Spider-Man, but this time we’re taking a stand and revealing some Stephen King secrets. Watch more installments of ‘You Think You Know Movies?’ below and let us know in the comments what movies we should cover next!
