Indiana Mom Stirs Up Big Trouble By Sending Gay Son to School with a Stun Gun to Confront Bullies

An Indiana mother is making headlines today because she sent her 17-year old gay son, Darnell Young, to school at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis one day last month armed with a stun gun to protect himself against bullies.

Now the teen is facing expulsion.

Young’s mother, Chelisa Grimes, defended her decision, saying:

I do not promote violence — not at all — but what is a parent to do when she has done everything that she felt she was supposed to do…at the school? I did feel like there was nothing else left for me to do, but protect my child.”

A report made by Young states that six students who were calling him names and threatening to beat him up surrounded him at school.

Young then pulled the stun gun from his backpack, raised it in the air and set off an electric charge. The group then fled the scene. A short time later, school police officers arrested Young and took him away in handcuffs.

In the same report Larry Yarrell, the principal of the school said,”If you wear female apparel, then kids are kids and they’re going to say whatever it is that they want to say. Because you want to be different and because you choose to wear female apparel, it may happen. In the idealistic society, it shouldn’t matter. People should be able to wear what they want to wear.”

Although school officials are investigating the incident, Grimes still believes that they haven’t done enough to help protect the students at Arsenal Tech.

She insists that her son’s complaints to the school have fallen on deaf ears, noting,”I think that the self-protection device is what’s making the news, but the big picture is that my child is not the only one who does not feel safe at our school.”

The school district held an expulsion hearing last week but no decision has been announced.
