On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard its second day of arguments on the issue of same-sex marriage, specifically a challenge to the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). This follows Tuesday's case concerning California's Proposition 8.
This week the Supreme Court is hearing arguments for Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in California. They are also weighing the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
To show their support for the LGBT community, people have been changing their profile pictures on Facebook. It started as big blocks of solid red. Then changed to a red block with a pink equal sign, which is symbol of the Human Rights Campaign. Now things have gotten a little out of control and some more creative options have popped up. Here are our favorites.
The English translation of Katy Perry’s matadorian cover of L’Uomo Vogue has popped up online, with the singer talking about familiar topics, like her fluffy sense of style, her strict Christian upbringing and her role models, which include Madonna and Alanis Morissette. We also learned something somewhat new from Perry, known for songs like ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and ‘Ur So Gay.’ While heterosexual herself, Perry is certainly open-minded when it comes to the LGBT community. She told the magazine that she supports equality when it comes to the institution of marriage.
A man by the name of Lair Scott created a petition on Change.org. The petition is asking for the marriage of Bert and Ernie. For years people have speculated that Bert and Ernie were homosexual. However, no one on Sesame Street has said one way or the other.
