In Hollywood, often people fail upwards, as there no other reason why Universal would hire Len Wiseman to helm their 'Mummy' Reboot (or re-reboot, if the 1930's and 40's versions count). But the man behind the 'Total Recall' remake is very close to being chosen to direct the film.

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Wiseman is all but signed on for 'The Mummy' reboot, which has a script from from Jon Spaihts, and will be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Spaihts was one of the writers of 'Prometheus,' so this makes for an interesting collection of talents.

Wiseman is a dull craftsman who - with 'Recall,' the negligible 'Live Free or Die Hard' and the first two 'Underworld' movies - hasn't shown much beyond competence. Hiring someone like Wiseman makes sense when his pictures make money, but what's surprising about this is that he's coming off of 'Recall,' which made less than $60 Million domestically and is at $172 Million worldwide. For a film that cost $125 Million, that would make it one of this summer's biggest bombs, as it made less money than either 'Battleship' or 'Dark Shadows.'

Wiseman told Deadline “It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.” To which Kurtzman added “It’s still a four quadrant film." The film is looking to hit theaters in the summer of 2014.
