Amarillo really is a kind city. We really do have compassion. When we see people that really need help we open up our hearts and sometimes our wallets Helping is what we do best.

Do You Know About Jimmy?

If you have ever driven down the access road off I40 by Blue Sky you may have noticed Jimmy. Now Jimmy is one of our homeless men in Amarillo. Jimmy pretty much keeps to himself. You will know it's Jimmy because he spends his time making art. It is something he learned to do when he was in prison. I asked him how he got so good. He was honest.

Now I got to know Jimmy while my friend and I were doing training walks around Amarillo. One day we saw Jimmy and we asked his name. That is when I asked him about his art and how he got so good. Then a few weeks later we saw him again. We stopped and said hi to Jimmy. We called him by his name and his eyes just lit up. You could tell how much it meant to him that we remembered his name. Sometimes it is the little things.

Recently I saw that Jimmy's story had touched other people's lives. I saw a post on social media wanting to help him. They had started a GoFundMe. It wasn't to raise a ton of money to get him off the streets. That is not Jimmy's way. They wanted to get supplies that he needed to continue his artwork. This way Jimmy could sell his work and help himself.

I started chatting with Robert McGee who started the GoFundMe. He was working on setting up an event where Jimmy could show off his artwork and sell a few pieces. He also got Jimmy a cell phone so that he could be in contact with him. The thing about being homeless and you may not be easy to find.

The GoFundMe so far has raised nearly $800 and Jimmy has been doing what Jimmy does. Art. He really does some great work. When we see him during our walks we always stop to admire what he is working on at the moment.

According to Robert now is the time to show off his work:

Everyone, Jimmy is back!!!! We are going to be at John S Stiff Memorial Park off of Bell St, Saturday the 28th from 3pm - 5pm! Jimmy will be displaying some of his art and have some for sale! We will be at Shoshone Trail and Zuni Trail intersection. Anybody is welcome to come by to look at his art, chat with us, or purchase a piece! Please come by and support Jimmy!

His artwork is pretty dang good and if you haven't seen him on the streets of Amarillo while he was working you can now. He will have all his latest work around to show off and help him get on his feet.
