Unpredictable Amarillo Weather Leaves Some Parents Unhappy
When we hear there is snow heading to Amarillo we like to be prepared. The city wants to be prepared. They want to try to get the roads prepared ahead of time. We want to make sure we are ready too.
We make sure the kids are dressed warmly. We get out the hats and gloves. We make sure our cars are loaded. I always make sure my gas tank is full before a snow storm. You never know when you will lose power and that car may be your only source of warmth and keeping a phone charged.
Then there are those days that just happen and no amount of preparing can really get us ready when things don't happen the way we expect. Amarillo weather can be like that. When we went to bed last night the expected snow for today was 2-4 inches.
The snow was supposed to start much later than it did. Then it seemed it just didn't stop. Our schools have to make a decision by 6 am. The decision was made to have classes. Remember parents always have the option of keeping their kids home when the weather is bad and they don't feel safe.
So when the snow started coming down and didn't stop the decision had to be made. The schools were closing early. First Amarillo made the decision.
Then Canyon followed suit:
I saw a lot of parents upset that the decision had been made so late. I get it. I do. I don't have kids in school anymore but I can see why this was such a tough decision to make. There have been times that the weather was supposed to get bad and it didn't and the school districts closed ahead of time. They were being proactive and nothing happened. There were parents upset about that too.
They can't win. With Amarillo weather, you can't always predict the craziness that happens. So, give some grace to the districts that are just trying to do the right thing. You can always choose to keep your kiddos home if you want. They do make that clear.
Most parents have not seen a day like today. I know I went to Canyon schools in the nineties and my daughter went to Amarillo schools all her life and I don't remember this happening either but just enjoy it.
Amarillo weather you have got to love it.
