What is the Most Spoken Language in Amarillo?

Our city's name, Amarillo, literally means yellow in Spanish. So with our city being an actual Spanish word, you would think that Spanish would be one of our city's most commonly spoken languages.

English is Spoken Most in Our Area but Their Are Other Languages

Of course according to our latest census non-English speaking families, Spanish is the most spoken language in Amarillo. I didn't find that to be a surprise at all. What floored me was all of the other languages we can hear around Amarillo.

Behind English and Spanish there are at least nine other languages that make up the list. Next is Swahili or other languages of Central, Eastern, and South Africa. Those speakers make up .54% of the population of Amarillo.

Now when we speak of the Amarillo area we also include Borger and Pampa in this list. How many of these languages have you heard around the area?

Third on the list of most common languages in the Amarillo area are the folks who speak Vietnamese. Now some of the folks who speak other languages also speak English very well. Some only speak their main language here in Amarillo.

The other languages in the top five are Thai, Lao or other Tai-Kadai languages followed by Persian.

That is five different languages you can hear around our area but the list doesn't stop there. Nope, not at all. Any credible list has a top ten, right?

So, What are the Other Five Languages on the List?

Amharic, Somali, or other Afro-Asiatic languages

• Arabic
• Tagalog (incl. Filipino)
• German
• French (incl. Cajun)

So, how many different languages have you heard being spoken around the area? I know I have never heard anyone speaking German or French. I would be interested in running into someone speaking French. It would have helped me feel a little better taking so many years of it in high school.  Not that I think I have retained enough to help me understand a word.
