Why You Need a ‘Gold Star’ to Fly in Texas and Beyond
It's something that has been coming for a long time in Amarillo, but that time has officially come. If you haven't received a gold star, it's time to get one.
No, I'm not asking you to go back to school and ask your former teacher for that little gold sticker; I'm talking about on your driver's license.

What Is The Gold Star
It's part of the REAL ID Act that was passed back in 2005. According to the Texas Department of Safety, the act was adopted in response to the terrorist attacks in order to help identify what should be accepted as identity documents by the government.
Having the gold star on our driver's license or identification card means you've been verified as the person you say you are, and it becomes an immediately accepted document.
Where Is It On My License
It's very easy to spot. If you look in the upper right-hand corner of your driver's license or ID, you'll see the star inside the Texas silhouette.
If you don't see the star up there, you will need to get a new driver's license or ID.
Why Do I Need The Gold Star
As of May 7, 2025, you won't be able to fly out of Rick Husband International Airport or any Texas airport unless you bring accompanying documentation. This has been something that has been on the table for quite some time now, but the deadline has been pushed back a couple of times.
Time is up now, and without the gold star, you'll need to bring another form of identification that's approved, such as a passport, in order to board a flight or enter a military base or other secure federal facility.
How Can I Get The Gold Star
It's truly as simple as getting a new driver's license or ID. Honestly, there's a good chance you already have it on your ID. Texas started issuing the gold star back in late 2016, so if you've gotten a new ID since then, you more than likely have it.
If not, simply go to the DMV and get a new license or ID card, and you'll be set to go.
