The last couple of years in Amarillo have been tough on restaurants. We've seen quite a few close their doors, with a few of those being favorites around the city. We've also seen some open their doors, but not really last.

Just take a look at 5900 SW 45th Ave. A few years ago, it opens its doors as "The Catch", then months later they shut down. Same owners, new concept. Welcome Roll 'Em Up Taquitos to Amarillo. Nope, that didn't stick either.

Just the other day, we found out that Qdoba Mexican Grill is set to take over that location. Maybe the third time is a charm.

I remember hearing way back in 2023 that a Five Guys was going to be opening next to the O'Reilly Auto Parts store on Soncy. It's now been over a year since this news hit the streets of Amarillo...and somehow it still looks like this.

So we never got that location, and I'd bet we have the economy to blame for it never even beginning work to open.

Then a couple of months ago, a sign popped up on Saigon Restaurant that they were closing their doors as well. Initially it was temporary until they found a new location, but that doesn't seem to have come to fruition and the building was placed up for sale.

Well now we can let some speculation begin as the old Saigon Restaurant building is showing it's already been purchased. That didn't take long for someone to swoop in and snatch it. I mean, it's in a pretty solid location with a lot of traffic there on the frontage road and near Bubba's 33.

Now, we don't have any word yet as to WHAT could be sliding in there, but I'd say there's a good chance it'll be a restaurant. Then again, I've been known to be wrong. So, let the guessing begin as to what could be popping up in that location.

And if anyone knows what happened to the Five Guys going in on Soncy, please let me know. I was really looking forward to that one.
