There are some definite problem spots in Amarillo as far as safety when it comes to pedestrians and vehicles. Some areas are blind, others are just busy and tough to gauge.

However, there is one intersection that is perplexing as to why something hasn't been done to improve it. Safety should always be paramount when thinking about building something new, and they really didn't think through West Plains High School.

Amarillo Intersection Scariest In The City

Over time, there have been numerous issues at the intersection of Helium Rd. and Arden Rd. since West Plains High School was built there. If you've never had a reason to try and cross that intersection, it's like trying to play Frogger (if you're old enough to remember that game).

It's a split highway intersection with a lot of ground to cover in order to get to the high school. Whether you're in a car or on foot, it is daunting. Furthermore, there is no stoplight there to allow a crossing to happen safely.

Accident Involving A Pedestrian

Yesterday, June 16, 2025, another accident took place at this intersection involving an SUV and a pedestrian on foot. The pedestrian was apparently a minor trying to cross it to the high school.

As of the last update we got on the pedestrian, they were in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

How Can The Intersection Be Safer

Simply put, a stoplight at the intersection would make it infinitely safer. With a high school being right there, one would think it would be a no-brainer to have a light there. However, there's nothing there despite numerous accidents involving students.

So, who is responsible for doing something about this? According to the city and county, TXDOT is the one responsible for doing something about it. How many life-threatening injuries and fatalities will it take?

Why Isn't TXDOT Looking Into This

Allegedly, they have indeed done studies on this exact intersection, but the results of the study they did said it didn't justify the installation of a traffic signal there. I bet if we did some digging, we would find a fair amount of accidents involving kids and others since the school was built.

If you're so inclined, and I am since my oldest will be going to WPHS next year, you can always reach out to the Amarillo representatives. Representative John Smithee can be reached at (806) 372-3327, while Senator Kevin Sparks can be contacted at (806) 374-8994.
