One of the very first places in Amarillo that catered to the more alternative lifestyle is a colorful building located at 10th and Madison.  It has been an Amarillo staple for decades.

It was one of the coolest places to visit for just about everyone. Most of the time you probably went for the novelty, other times, it was for the necessity. Other times, you just felt cool being inside "The Box".

The Music Box

The Music Box has been an Amarillo icon, since 1969. It was the gathering place of local hippie tribes, so to speak.

The Music Box started as a Record Store and evolved into a local icon.

While some of us went to The Music Box for the coolest hair color, others went for the tie-dyes, dancing bear art, unique flags, or vases. You might have even squeezed up the spiral staircase to get a piercing or tattoo before that part of the Music Box moved across the street.

And most of us (including my editor) have an all too-common story of how they got promptly kicked out of the building if they used a certain terminology when referring to a certain item (the real ones know). It was a mistake that was usually only made once.

The Music Box meant something.

With its history, it's possible your parents, grandparents, or even great-grandparents stepped through the doors.

Going to The Music Box is a right of passage.

What this generation might not know, is The Music Box still exists. It is still the place you can go to find those unique gifts, tie-dyes and vases.  However, it also offers a wide variety of vapes and other products including Delta and CBD products.

And, yes, there is still a small section of those adult toys.

Since so many smoke shops have popped up in the last 20 years many people forget that The Music Box remains.

Isn't The Music Box Haunted?

Although we're pretty sure The Music Box is haunted, paranormal investigators found proof of ghost activity...on tape!  Haunted or not, it's still a cool place to go and visit.

The Music Box is currently transforming and expanding. Next door to the Music Box was a small building that has been the home to many businesses--it was the original location of Yellow City Street Food!

However, The Music Box has acquired this building, and it will soon open for Smokes and Cokes.  A convenient way to grab your vapes and a few other items from the comfort of your car.

Not only will that be a cool part of the landscape of The Music Box.  Another great opening is what they called The Tiny Box.  It's an apartment that will soon be available to rent.  You could live right next to this historical iconic Amarillo spot.
