When our fellow Amarilloans do well we want to shout their accomplishments so everyone can hear. Especially if those native Amarilloans are serving in the military.
The U.S. Navy has recently spotlighted one Amarillo Native.
Hospitalman Ophelia Harris is a sailor in the Spotlight at U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command in Sigonella, Italy.
Harris was recognized for their swift adaptation to NMRTC Sigonella and their willingness to take on additional responsibilities. They also help train new corpsmen.

“I joined the Navy because I wanted to serve my country and better myself at the same time,” said Harris. “I want to test my limits and reach my full potential as a nurse, a person and as a sailor.”
Harris shared that serving in the military has helped them grow as a person and in their career.
Harris has quickly made their mark at NMRTC Sigonella in the MSW Department, according to Petty Officer 1st Class Mary Leepruitt, Harris’ leading petty officer. Harris’ commitment to nursing and patient care has been evident since their arrival, with their enthusiasm for learning and their strong work ethic.
“Taking on roles outside her normal job, shows that she is a team player and motivated sailor in the command,” said Leepruitt. “Harris is a great example of an inspiring leader in the Navy.”
