1912 - THE DIXIE CUP WAS INVENTED.

1925 - Tennessee banned the TEACHING OF EVOLUTION in public schools because it contradicted the account of creation in the Bible.

High school teacher John T. Scopes put that law to the test, and his subsequent trial was dubbed by the press "THE SCOPES MONKEY TRIAL".  He was convicted.  The law against the teaching of evolution was not repealed until 1967.

1964 -PETER LORRE died of a stroke at 59.  He played opposite Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca" and "The Maltese Falcon", and served up comic relief for Kirk Douglas in Walt Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea".

1980 - A gunman held up the New York office of Elektra Records, demanding to speak to the EAGLES or JACKSON BROWNE.  He gave up when he was told they lived in California.

1985 - BILLY JOEL and CHRISTIE BRINKLEY were married in New York.  They divorced in 1994.

1985 - Jeanine Deckers, better known as "THE SINGING NUN" killed herself in a suicide pact with another woman.  She was 52.  As the Singing Nun, Deckers had a #1 single with "Dominique" in 1963.

1987 - The first "Soul Train Music Awards" were held. JANET JACKSON, LUTHER VANDROSS and CAMEO had the Best R&B Albums.  Best Rap Album went to RUN-D.M.C.

1989 - After 33 years, DICK CLARK retired from hosting "American Bandstand".

1994 - WAYNE GRETZKY, broke GORDIE HOWE'S NHL career record with his 802nd goal.

1995 - The TUPAC disc, "Me Against The World", debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 album chart.  Tupac was in prison at the time, having been convicted three months earlier for sexually assaulting a woman in his hotel room in 1993.

1998 - "Titanic" won 11 Oscars at the 70th Academy Awards, tying the record set by "Ben Hur" back in 1959.  "Titanic" won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Song and BestActress for KATE WINSLET.
