A former high school teacher who was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl was sentenced to 30 days in jail. The girl later committed suicide.

A Yellowstone judge, G. Todd Baugh, sentenced Stacey Dean Rambold to 15 years in prison following his conviction for raping his student. The judge then proceeded to suspend all of the sentence except for 31 days for sexual intercourse without consent. Rambold was given credit for 1 day served and led to jail to serve the other 30 days before being released.

The girls mother was heard saying "You people suck!" and storming out of the courtroom. Auliea Hanlon spoke out during her testimony stating that the rape was a "major factor" in her daughter's suicide. She then begged the judge to send Rambold to prison. "Please put him behind bars" she said.

Rambold admitted to one of three of the rape charges and agreed his admission could be used against him in court.
