The Apps That Can Help With Your Chaotic Life

My day-to-day life is pretty much chaos. It is. And most days, I'm ok with that. This is what I chose, after all. I chose to have children and continue my career. I chose to enroll all three children in the extra-curricular activity of their choosing. And for the most part, I love the daily chaos. I thrive on pressure. I love being busy. When I don't have deadlines or a to-do list, I grow bored very quickly and then I become completely unmotivated.

Kids Do the Darndest Things – The Woes of Technology

This week, the big theme in our house has been focused on technology. Specifically, how it should *not* be used. My children have iPod's and/or tablet devices. There are rules. They can't download apps (or anything else) without asking. They can't connect via e-mail, text, Facetime, or anything else, without asking. They can't set up their own accounts for anything. They can't purchase anything. They can't use these devices after "lights out." They can't take these devices to school. And, they've all been warned we will routinely check their devices, their browsing history, their e-mail, and whatever else we see fit, without notice.

Somewhere Along the Way I’ve Forgotten How to Breathe – The Spin-Cycle of Life

I have to say I have had a rough couple of months. A crazy reaction to a new medication literally threw my body into some kind of lurch. It also has been a big wake up call for me. You always hear people talking about taking "better" care of themselves. But at this point, I've realized I just need to take care of myself. Period. The "better" part will have to come when I'm actually doing the things for myself that I should have been doing all along.

Remember When – How Valentine’s has Changed For Us

I remember on Valentine's Day a good 15 years or so ago, my husband and I, so very young and naive, planned to celebrate with dinner at a restaurant. On Valentine's Day. In Amarillo. On a Friday night.

Working Mothers It’s OK to Still Dream – In Fact, You Should

Working Mother Magazine just released it's list of "25 Mothers of Reinvention" and I am super excited about it. What girl doesn't love the thought of reinventing herself. Sometimes, all it takes is a new hair cut, or even something as simple as tube of bright red lipstick. Sometimes, it's a new attitude.

“Her” Story – An Outsider Sharing a Moment with Strangers

A crowd gathered, so many people they were almost smushed, inside the small corner they had claimed in the hospital waiting room. Some were clearly family. You could tell by the obvious resemblance. One woman introduced herself as "her" co-worker. I still don't know who "she" is, but as I sat in the surgery waiting room this week, waiting for news on my loved one, I listened intently, almost mesmerized by the goings-on across the room from me. I began to think of it as "her" corner.

Through My Child’s Eyes

This week, I am absolutely digging this story posted on the Huffington Post parents feed.

It's all about the way one family told their son he has Down syndrome. I love how the kid just basically shrugs his shoulders and goes on about his day, the weight of what his parents had known for so long having absolutely no impact.

Why Do TV Show Depict Woman as Crazy People With Too Many Problems?

I am not some kind of uber feminist. Really. I'm not.

The world has changed a great deal in my lifetime. Women have broke through so many barriers. But I do believe there's still work to be done.

Snack Pak 4 Kids Serving 3800 Children in the Texas Panhandle – Here’s How You Can Help

While working on a freelance writing project this week, I learned something that is kind of shocking to me. There are children at every school in Amarillo going hungry on the weekends. Every school. Even in the "upscale" neighborhoods. Even in your neighborhood. Sometimes, I am guilty of living in my happy little bubble of oblivion. This is one of those times. I literally had no idea. Certainly, I assumed this must be true at some of our schools. But ALL of them? My mind has been blown and my bubble burst.
