HBO Taps David Fincher to Remake ‘Utopia’ with ‘Gone Girl’ Author Gillian Flynn

We weren’t at all surprised yesterday to see HBO picking up buzzy Jack Black comedy ‘The Brink,’ what with 2014 bringing the final seasons of ‘True Blood,’ ‘The Newsroom‘ and ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ atop the cancellations of ‘Family Tree‘ and ‘Hello Ladies,’ and now the premium cable network has added even more cinematic pedigree to its lineup. David Fincher has re-teamed with ‘Gone Girl‘ writer Gillian Flynn for an HBO remake of UK series ‘Utopia,’ sure to attract even more big-name talent to the network.

Flynn herself will write the series as part of her overall development deal with HBO, while Fincher (‘Gone Girl,’ ‘The Social Network,’ ‘House of Cards‘) will executive produce and direct. For those unfamiliar with ‘Utopia’ in its original incarnation, HBO’s logline on the series reads thusly:

The die-hard fans of an iconic, underground graphic novel are suddenly launched into their own pop-culture thriller when they learn that the author has secretly written a sequel. Unfortunately, the new manuscript is much more than just a book and those on the hunt for it suddenly find themselves in a game of shifting loyalties, conspiracy and shocking twists as the true meaning of the book is slowly revealed.

Given how aggressively HBO pursued Fincher for ‘House of Cards’ (though that show ended up on Netflix), it’s something of a no-brainer this made it past the pilot phase. You can check out the original ‘Utopia’ trailer below, but in the meantime, what do you think? Will Fincher and Gillian Flynn’s future lie with premium cable?
