For the first time since 2002, the floodgates at Ute Lake in Logan, New Mexico have been opened to lower the water level from all the recent rains. In just the past 2 months, Ute Lake has seen a level rise of 10 feet. Some of that water is going to be headed our way over the next 30 days.

The water that is being released flows into the Canadian River which will feed into Lake Meredith, 150 miles downstream. Lake Meredith is expected to take on a lot of water and at a quick pace. Ute Lake officials are looking to lower the large body of water by about 3 feet. There is no word yet on how much Lake Meredith is expected to rise, but that this time, it sits at a depth of 73 feet. The record height stands at 101 feet.

Over the past several years, parts of the panhandle have experienced a drought which makes this a welcome event. The quality of fishing has increased at Lake Meredith as well as more recreational opportunities which have returned.
