Malawi’s President Breaks Up With Madonna
snatching up adopting two children from the African nation, Malawi’s President Joyce Banda isn’t too enthused with the work Madonna has done for the country, and has effectively told her, “It’s not us, it’s you.”
Banda is lashing out at the queen of pop after she backpedaled on plans to build a multimillion dollar school for girls in the country — a decision that came after reports that several trusted charity officials were expropriating funds for luxury items like the true material girls they apparently are.
“Madonna came to Malawi to build a school, an academy like the one Oprah (Winfrey) build in South Africa, but she changed her mind,” Banda told the Telegraph.
After the girls’ school fell through, Madonna said she wanted to instead build 10 schools in the country (maybe because of billionaire philanthropist envy). But government officials slapped her down — rejecting a lot of money and positive press for the struggling country in the process. Your call, Malawi.
“I have a problem with a lot of things around the adoption of the children and the changing of the mind and then coming back to build community schools,” Banda said.
Then, in a seamless act of passive-aggression, she turned around and said she was over it: “I don’t want to discuss that, I don’t want that to be top of my agenda because it doesn’t matter … It’s something [Madonna] offered to do, and she has changed her mind – that’s fine.”
Meanwhile, Madonna’s camp has doubled down on the charity efforts, saying the singer has donated $11 million out of pocket and will continue to do so despite the President’s comments. Translation: Shove it.
You cannot escape Madonna’s biceps of doom, Africa! Gird your loins.
