Tomorrow kicks off Memorial Day weekend with a day set aside for burgers, of all things. Tomorrow (5/28) is National Hamburger Day.

To celebrate, and just because I love them, at my house we're having "Charlie's Smash Burgers."

They're my favorite thing to cook on my griddle. They're quick, simple, and everyone in my family loves them.

How I Make My Smash Burgers

For my smash burgers, less is more. All you really need is a generous amount of salt and pepper to season the hamburger meat with once it's on the griddle.

My burger build is:

  • Two beef patties (80/20 hamburger meat)
  • two slices of American cheese
  • lettuce
  • tomato
  • grilled/caramelized onions (depending on how much time I have)
  • real mayo (not that miracle stuff)
  • dash of mustard
  • pickles
  • well toasted cheap-as-you-can-buy-it burger bun.

Not to toot my own horn, but my kids won't eat a burger from any fast food restaurant in town. They will, however, eat their weight in my burgers.

In case you've never made one before, here is a tutorial I used to get started before figuring out how to make them the way I like.

I don't weigh each of the individual burgers before grilling. That seems like a bit too much work for me. I just make what looks like a small snowball and then get to smashing.

Dairy Queen is having a sale on burgers. For National Hamburger Day you'll be able to buy-one-get-one on Hungr-Buster burgers.

There is a catch to the deal though. You'll need their app in order to get it. It can be downloaded from the Google Play or Apple App Store.

If this all seems like too much work for you, there are tons of food trucks in town and they will be out all weekend. I'm sure you will be able to scrounge up a burger or two.
