It seems like every couple weeks there is a new phone scam in the area.

Over the weekend the Amarillo Police Department received numerous calls reporting a caller who seemed to be a scam. The scammer will call from a local number and claim to be "Sergeant Sellers" or "Detective Samuel Hammett".

He will go on to say that you have a warrant out that needs to be paid. He will ask if you want to pay it with a Green Dot Card, iTunes card, or another gift card. If you receive a call like this be aware that the Police department will never call and ask you to pay over the phone, or with gift cards.

Personally, my rule of thumb is to never answer a phone number I don't recognize. If it is important, they will leave a message. If you don't like that idea then just be careful.

APD asks that you only report this incident if you have fallen victim to the scam.
