The Han Solo Spinoff Isn’t Actually About Han ‘Getting His Name’
A couple weeks ago, when Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the Han Solo spinoff was going to be about “How Han got his name,” the internet, understandably, went a little wobbly. Is Han Solo not Han Solo’s name?? What was his name before he was Han Solo?? What does it all MEAN??? Well, we can all relax now, because what looked like a mysterious plot detail was actually just a poorly-chosen turn of phrase.
What Iger actually meant was that we’re going to find out how Han made a name for himself, by flying around the galaxy smuggling all kinds of good stuff, shooting first, and generally running the Empire ragged chasing after him. When MTV caught up with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy at Star Wars Celebration, she confirmed that Iger didn’t mean for his words to be taken so literally.
I’m not sure that that’s entirely what Bob meant. There’s more to Han Solo’s name, but it’s not that it’s not his name. It’s obviously his name. It will always be his name!
She’s still being maybe overly mysterious about all this, but I think we can safely say that Han Solo is named Han Solo, and that’s mostly all there is to it. Certainly, his name has meaning — “Solo” connotes a character who’s a bit of a rogue and not used to being a part of a team — but it’s definitely his name. His only name. Given Star Wars’ penchant for keeping important twist-revealing secrets like certain characters’ parentages under wraps until the last possible second, it’s no wonder that something like this would cause fans to speculate themselves into next month. But now we can all relax and get back to our regularly scheduled programming, a.k.a. arguing about whether or not Rey is a Skywalker.
