Florida and Texas have a lot in common. We both have gators. Both states have plentiful beachfront property. Florida and Texas both have a knack for weird roadside attractions. One thing they don't have in common is the rate of violent crime. Which one do you think is safer; Texas or Florida?

Florida Crime Rates

According to the information I was able to dig up, Florida actually did pretty well in 2023. Many headlines tout the relatively safe life people in Florida live when it comes to violent and property crimes.

According to reports, the crime rates in Florida were:

  • Property Crime - 17.46 crimes per 1,000 people
  • Violent Crime - 3.92 crimes per 1,000 people

That's not bad. Any amount is too much, but those numbers could be worse.

Texas Crime Rates

We've seen several headlines over 2023 proclaiming Texas as one of the safest states to live in. You have to imagine it had something to do with the number of people that flocked to the Lone Star State in 2023. That many people wouldn't move to our little slice of Earth if it wasn't a safe place to be.

According to reports, crime rates in Texas were:

  • Property Crime - 21.9 crimes per 1,000 people
  • Violent Crime - 4.6 crimes per 1,000 people

Again, any number is too much, but these could be way worse. So, which one is safe?

When It Comes To Crime, Florida Is Safer Than Texas

I was a little shocked when I looked at the numbers side-by-side. Florida just barely edges out Texas. I honestly thought that Texas would have walked away with this one.

The most interesting aspect is that when it comes to violent crimes, the two states were very close. When it came to property crime, Florida gained the edge by four and a half points. When comes to violent crime, Florida came out "safer" by tenths of a point.
