Director Bryan Singer Recasts ‘The Usual Suspects’ For 2013

Usual Suspects Recast
Universal Pictures/The Weinstein Co/Sony Pictures Classics

Almost 20 years ago, ‘The Usual Suspects’ hit theaters and stunned audiences, turning Kevin Spacey into an Oscar-winning actor and Bryan Singer into an A-list director. But, what if he had to do it all over again?

Responding to a fan’s question on Twitter, Singer revealed that if he had to cast a ‘Usual Suspects’ remake in 2013, this is who he’d want for the iconic roles.

In a series of tweets, Singer revealed that his updated cast would look like this:

Keaton – Chris Hemsworth
McManus – Dane DeHaan
Hockney – Jonah Hill
Fenster – Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Edie – Jennifer Lawrence
Kobayashi – Michael Fassbender
Kujan – Edward James Olmos
Verbal – Benedict Cumberbatch

Singer has already worked with Fassbender and Lawrence on ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘ and is obviously fans of the rest. And, while we can’t say we oppose any movie that stars this impressive roster of young actors, we’re just not liking the idea as it applies to ‘The Usual Suspects.’

Part of what made ‘The Usual Suspects’ work was that you didn’t really know these guys. Think back on it: the most famous face in the movie was Stephen Baldwin. Stephen Baldwin! There were plenty of people who saw the movie and thought Benicio Del Toro actually talked like that. In a movie when you don’t really know who anyone really is, is a cast where you don’t really know who anyone is.

Before we get all bent out of shape about this, it’s important to remember, it’s not actually happening. A fan asked Singer a question and, to have some fun with it, Singer answered. We just hope something like this never happens. (Oh, who are we kidding, we’re surprised a ‘Usual Suspects’ remake hasn’t happened already.)
