Up until a few months ago, we knew that Wonder Woman would take place during World War I, and that the primary antagonist was probably something metaphorical like the evils of war itself, but in January we learned that the main villain of the movie would literally be war, personified. Ares is one of Diana’s primary antagonists in the comics, and we actually saw a little bit of him in the short TV spot that director Patty Jenkins debuted last night.

[This post contains some potential SPOILERS for Wonder Woman.]

David Thewlis plays a character officially called “Sir Patrick” in the movie, but we also know that he’ll be playing Ares, in some capacity. The villain is usually seen as a tall superhuman figure, dressed in ancient-style Greco-Roman armor, and in some comics his very presence causes fighting to break out. So far he’s been absent from any footage we’ve seen, but if you watch very closely, you can catch him in the latest TV spot (h/t Heroic Hollywood).

The frame in question appears about 0:11 in. It’s that quick shot where Diana’s blocking some huge weapon with her bracers, and you can see the side of the helmet of the person fighting her. It’s not much, but hey, at least we know Ares is there!

Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that’s raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman hits theaters June 2.
