Amarillo PD Rolls Out New Body And Car Cams
After the Amarillo City Council approved spending $1.4 million on new body cameras and car cameras earlier this year, the Amarillo Police Department has officially implemented them.
All patrolling officers have been wearing body cams now for two months however they are not recording all the time. They are required to start recording any time the officer initiates contact with the public.
The new body cams automatically sync up with 2 mounted cameras mounted in more than 130 police vehicles. The car cameras start recording automatically when the lights are turned on.
All recordings are stored in accordance with state records, which means it is treated as evidence and will be kept as long as the statute of limitations allows for each case.
235 body cameras are now in use on all APD officers.
