UPDATE: This story has been updated as of 3/7/2021 at 8:30pm to include information about the arrest of a suspect.

I woke up this morning, fed my son and fixed my coffee, then opened up my Facebook feed. That’s how I found out that the owner of Rumors, Cindy Jayroe, died early this morning from a gunshot wound.

I am not ashamed to admit that more than a few tears were shed on my end.

Rumors was a special place during my early twenties. I dated someone for seven years and our relationship officially started the night he called me and asked me to come meet him there. We talked until Cindy (lovingly) threw us out.

Cindy Jayroe was a tough woman who loved fiercely and with all of her heart. We didn’t become regulars at Rumors because of the drink specials or events, we became regulars because it felt like a second home. Cindy Jayroe was a large part of why.

Within the hour of learning that Cindy passed, I received an alert on my phone. An official message to the community from Amarillo Police Department:

On March 7, 2021 at 1:26 AM, Amarillo Police Officers responded to shots fired outside of Rumors Bar at 1500 southwest 10th Avenue. Officers located a victim inside the front doors of the bar with a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim, 56-year-old Cindy Kay Jayroe, was transported to a local area hospital and later died of her injuries. Several shots were fired in the parking lot and the suspect fled the scene. The APD Homicide Unit is investigating the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the APD Homicide Unit at 378-9468 or Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 374-4400. Tips can also be given anonymously online at www.amapolice.org or on the Amarillo Crime Stoppers P3 mobile app.

From what I’ve gathered, a barfight broke out in Rumors, and Cindy (brave and tired of everyone's crap, as always) went to break it up and remove the brawlers. Somewhere in the process, a gun was pulled out and Cindy was shot in the chest.

She leaves behind a devastated family and community, including myself. If you are reading this and you have information, please reach out to the authorities.

*Update* Arrest Made for Murder of Cindy Jayroe

On 3/7/2021 at 7:30pm this information was released by the Amarillo Police Department:

On March 7, 2021, APD Homicide Detectives secured a murder warrant for 25-year-old Trecoby Leon Campbell in the shooting death of Cindy Jayroe. Campbell was arrested and booked into the Potter County Detention Center.

SupaMarcus Stiles, a local performer and community fixture, announced there will be a benefit at Marshall’s Tavern tonight, all proceeds will go to the Jayroe family. And I’m sure there will many more efforts to help the family of someone who loved her little community so much that we called her “Bar Momma”.

Say You're From Amarillo Without Saying You're From Amarillo

Amarillo is a pretty quirky place. We've got the Big Texan, the weird signs, and (obviously) the famed Cadillac Ranch. But more than that, there's a distinct culture of close-knit community, eccentrics, a thriving arts scene, and much more.

The point is, living in Amarillo is a unique experience. Because of that, it's really pretty easy to tell who's a native or a long-time resident. And I can prove it.

Here's a couple of ways you can say you're from Amarillo.....without saying you're from Amarillo.
