Spring is officially here in Amarillo, Texas. It's time to get outdoors. Head to a park. Take a walk. Dust off your bicycle and go for a ride. In Texas, your bicycle must have:
- brakes that can make a braked wheel skid on dry, clean, and level pavement
- a headlight or "lamp" if you plan to ride at night
- A rear red reflector or rear red light if you plan to ride at night
You also must use hand signals to let everyone know when you're making a turn. It's the same idea as using the blinker that so many of us seem to forget exists. In fact, most of the same rules that apply to vehicles on the road apply to bicycles. You can read them here.
What To Check Before You Take Your Bike Out This Spring
Before you take your bike out on the road, there are a few things you'll want to check.
- Check your brakes
- Check your tires for cuts, scrapes, and make sure they're inflated properly
- Check your chain and steering
- Check the batteries in your headlight/lamp and your rear light if you have one

I can't wait to get out on our tandem bike and start going for rides this year. I just went through and checked everything, got the tires aired up, and I'm ready for weekends in the sun. Brush up on bike laws, do your maintenance, and maybe I'll see you out there.
