Community Urged To Donate Blood Amid Critical Shortage In Amarillo
This year has been tough on the blood supply in the Texas panhandle. Coffee Memorial Blood Center in Amarillo, issued a news release earlier today detailing how desperate the situation really is. According to them, there is an incredible need for the community to step up.
Why Is The Blood Supply So Low In Texas Panhandle?
According to the news release from Coffee Memorial Blood Center, there's more than one reason for the current blood shortage. Reasons for the current shortage include:
- Bad Weather
- Widespread Illness
- Technical Disruptions
It's not just in Amarillo and the Texas panhandle. There are shortages all over the country at the moment. Usually, blood centers can rely on each other when there are shortages. That's not the case at the moment.
They also point out that we're in the middle of one of the worst flu seasons in 15 years. As you might be able to guess, you can't donate blood when you're fighting off the flu.
What Can We Do To Fix The Current Blood Shortage?
Coffee Memorial Blood Center is urging all eligible donors to make an appointment to donate. Blood donations are used in the care of cancer patients, trauma victims, burn survivors, mothers giving birth, and an array of life-threatening conditions.
If you are healthy and at least 16 years old, you are eligible to donate. It usually takes an hour to complete a donation, and your donation can potentially save three lives.
