Christmas Cards: To Send or Not to Send

Christmas Cards have always been the thing to do at Christmas.  However over the years I have noticed that I get fewer and fewer Christmas Cards.

So what is it with Christmas Cards?  Are they too expensive?  I know that those cool picture cards that people do now aren't cheap.  If you don't do a photo card is the plain handwritten card still acceptable?  Are we so connected socially that we don't bother with sending cards anymore?  Is postage that outrageous?
