‘Deadpool 2’ Will Be a ‘Solo Movie’ With ‘A Lot of Characters’
Deadpool, by his very nature as a mercenary, assassin, and general pain-in-the-butt, doesn’t play well with others. For most of his comic book life, he’s been separated from the rest of the Marvel Universe, although in recent years he has become an unlikely member of teams like X-Force, the Thunderbolts, and even the Avengers. His first movie, Deadpool, was similarly shut off, not just from the Marvel Cinematic Universe but most of the X-Men Cinematic Universe as well. Apart from appearances from Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Deadpool largely stood alone.
But Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick told Deadline the upcoming Deadpool sequel might be a little different. When asked whether Deadpool 2 would still be a “standalone sequel” for ’Pool, Rheese replied:
It’ll be a solo movie. It’ll be populated with a lot of characters, but it is still Deadpool’s movie, this next one. We’re pushing forward very hard. I think by every account we will shoot it this year, and we’re on our multiple draft now. It’s taken different twists and turns, but it’s really coalescing, and we’re very, very excited. We’re a little nervous, because now we feel like we have to live up to the first movie, but at the same time, we have to have faith, and we have an extreme passion still.
When the subject turned to whether Cable would appear in Deadpool 2, Werner replied “We always thought Cable should be in the sequel.” So while the pair didn’t officially confirm Nathan Summers will be in the film, they certainly didn’t deny it either.
The other key exchange in the interview (and the other key question that a lot of Deadpool fans are wondering about) was whether Ryan Reynolds’ mouthy mutant could potentially appear in the main X-Men franchise. While Reese said nothing like that has been planned yet, he also conceded that it wouldn’t “be too hard to drop Deadpool into another movie,” paving the way for lots more speculation, and many opportunities for Reynolds to drive other characters nuts with his constant wisecracks.
Deadpool 2 opens in theaters on March 2, 2018.
