On July 3 in Garland, Texas, a then-unidentified person walked into the Texas Credit Union and left with a wad of cash that wasn't theirs. On July 12, the same bank robber struck a second time and made off with another wad of other people's cash. Earlier this week, the so-called "Derby Desperado" was arrested by authorities in Grapevine bringing the short spree to an end.

The Derby Desperado Robbed Two Texas Banks In July 2024

It's a pretty brazen act, robbing two banks in such a short amount of time. One has to wonder what else was up their sleeve after making two getaways from such a simple robbery. Here are the quick takeaways:

  • Derby Desperado was a name used by law enforcement due to the disguise worn by the suspect. He wore the same light-colored fedora-style hat in each robbery.
  • In both robberies, the suspect handed a note to a bank teller.
  • On both occasions, the suspect got away in a dark SUV.

The Derby Desperado would walk into the bank wearing his fedora, a suit, gloves, and a surgical mask, and would be talking loudly on his phone. Once he reached the teller, he slipped them a demand note and then left with the cash.

It's interesting how low-key the robberies were. It's nothing like what you imagine in your mind. There was no brandishing of weapons at patrons, no crowd control; just a demand note.

Earlier this week, an arrest was made in the Derby Desperado robberies.

Who Is The Suspected Derby Desperado Of Texas?

What I find interesting is that the alert on Twitter was that he was arrested for involvement in the robbery on July 12. It makes me wonder about the robbery on July 3.  It will be interesting to see how this develops. As for now, all we know is a suspect who is allegedly involved in the July 12 bank robbery has been arrested.

We'll have to wait and see how this develops.
